The operating context
Asset management across a large retail network extends beyond a list of equipment. It involves outlets and head-office functions, with the need for a consistent approach across a distributed operating environment.
The initiative set out to establish that foundation: a shared policy, a clear end-to-end process, standard operating procedures, and a practical approach to tagging assets.
The problem to solve
A digital register is only one part of managing assets consistently. The organisation also needs a common understanding of how the process works and how the policy translates into day-to-day activity.
This made governance and process definition essential work before the implementation could be described as complete.
My contribution
I developed the fixed-asset policy and secured Finance sign-off. I also led the team in establishing the end-to-end process, standard operating procedures, and asset-tagging approach needed for implementation.
This work connected the policy level with the operational detail, giving the initiative a defined foundation to build on.
The approach
The work brought four parts together: the policy governing asset management, the end-to-end process, the procedures people would follow, and the tagging approach used during implementation.
The aim was consistency across a distributed business. The completed foundation gave implementation a common direction while the tagging and wider rollout continued.
What was established
The policy received Finance sign-off, and the process, procedures, and tagging approach were established. Implementation and asset tagging were still in progress at the time of the delivery summary.
The outcome presented here is the governance and process foundation. It does not imply that all assets had been tagged, that the rollout was complete, or that a financial benefit had already been measured.
